Three years after Pokemon Arus captured players’ attention with its bold take on the franchise, Game Freak returns with Pokemon Legends ZA. While it may initially appear as “just another Pokemon game,” ZA brings notable innovations that veteran players and newcomers alike will appreciate.

One of the most significant changes is the revamped battle system. Departing from the traditional turn-based mechanics, ZA introduces a real-time combat system with cooldowns. This change transforms how players approach battles, offering a more tactical and dynamic experience. Now, moves have variable cooldowns, and sometimes weaker attacks can be strategically superior to stronger ones due to timing or positioning. For example, ground-based moves may miss flying Pokémon unless executed properly, adding another layer of tactical thinking. The system also removes PP limitations, allowing full use of your Pokémon’s abilities without constant micromanagement.

For longtime fans of turn-based RPGs, this change might feel risky, but the results are impressive. Trainer battles are faster, and the ability to ambush enemies by approaching unnoticed adds a refreshing strategic element. Overall, the combat is engaging, lively, and arguably one of the most exciting aspects of any Pokemon game to date.

Outside of battle, ZA is set entirely within Lumio City, Pokemon’s version of Paris. While visually appealing and smoother than Scarlet and Violet on the original Switch, the city’s compact size can feel somewhat restrictive. The game offers urban exploration, obstacle courses, and side quests, but the limited wild zones leave little room for freedom in catching Pokémon. This contrasts with Arus, where vast open areas enhanced the joy of exploration and collection. Nevertheless, the city’s design and atmosphere are charming, and the day-night cycle introduces variety through night-only battle zones, which act like unique dungeons reminiscent of gyms.

ZA also brings a refreshed approach to Mega Evolutions, which now offer meaningful boosts for progression rather than just cosmetic changes. Combined with the streamlined research tracks and faster gameplay loops, ZA avoids many of the long downtimes that can bog down traditional Pokemon titles.

That said, the game is not without flaws. Limited open-world spaces, repetitive rank progression, and partially incomplete cutscenes with missing voice lines occasionally detract from immersion. However, these issues are minor compared to the excitement brought by the new battle system and the overall pace of the game. For players seeking a fresh experience, Pokemon Legends ZA is compelling, offering enough innovation to make it feel like a next-level Pokemon adventure.

For those who want to expand their collection efficiently, it’s worth noting the options to buy shiny pokemon or search for cheap Legends ZA Pokemon. While the game encourages exploration and strategy, these options can complement the gameplay for players looking to enhance their experience without excessive grinding.

Pokemon Legends ZA is a bold and refreshing addition to the Pokemon franchise. While its small urban setting and minor presentation quirks limit some exploration potential, the real-time combat system, tactical depth, and smooth gameplay make it an exciting experience for both new and veteran players. Though not flawless, the improvements over previous entries justify giving it a try.
